Saturday Artisan: W(e)il'd Hair & Accessories!

Meet Jodi, our Saturday Artisan. Browsing her shop, W(e)il'd Hair & Accessories!, is like coming in to a candy shop. :-)

I love her creations, so bright and cheerful. She is so good in putting colors together. Each creation is eye candy.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?

Hello!  I'm Jodi, the designer behind W(e)il'd Hair & Accessories!  I'm a north Florida native, have been married to my husband for 6 years and am mom to a five-year-old girl and two-year-old boy.  I've been making jewelry for almost a year and a half.  I'm a DIY junkie and on more than one occasion have thought to myself "I can do that".  My creative spark is ignited when the projects that I've challenged myself to make come to fruition.

W(e)il'd Hair & Accessories specializes in fun and colorful chunky jewelry for children and adults. Chunky beaded necklaces and bracelets are great statement pieces. They can be designed to complement any outfit or theme. So versatile, they can be worn on holidays, for photo shoots, for playing dress up, or as an every day accessory.

What is the story behind your shop name?

In 2012, I was invited to join a hair bow swap group, and got hooked on making hand-sewn yo yo flower hair clips and fabric-covered button ponytail holders.  When an opportunity came up to participate in a holiday craft fair, my new “business” needed a name.  W(e)il'd Hair originated as a play on my last name, Weil.

I really enjoyed making hair clips, except for the necessity of the hot glue gun.  I'm a bit of a perfectionist and found the glue gun frustrating. I constantly anticipated burned fingertips and big globs of glue everywhere.  However, I still had the desire to create and knew I needed to find something else to fuel my passion.  Enter chunky necklaces!  In 2013, with the shift in focus from hair to jewelry, W(e)il'd Hair became W(e)il'd Hair & Accessories.

Which part of creation process that you enjoy the most?

I'm truly passionate about the design process - arranging and rearranging beads until they are each in the perfect place - I step back and say to myself "Yes, that's IT!"

How do you balance your personal and work life?

No two days are alike.  I have two young children, a kindergartener and a preschooler, who attend two different schools and have two different drop off and pick up times!  Driving to school and picking up, lunchtime, naptime, household tasks - work time gets fit in among all these things!  It's definitely hard to balance and I'm still trying to figure out the most efficient way to get it all done.

Any advice for others running their on-line shop?

Be sure to take beautiful pictures and describe your items as though YOU are the one who is looking to buy them.  When you're posting tags, use 2-3 word phrases and think about how you would search for your product as though you were the consumer.  Don't be discouraged if you get your shop loaded up with your awesome items and don't get views right away.  It takes a lot of time and effort to market your products, but it's well worth it when you start seeing sales!

What does handmade mean to you?

Handmade means I'm sourcing all my supplies, coming up with unique and original designs, assembling my products, photographing, editing, marketing and listing them all on my own.  Handmade is often one of a kind.

If you could invent a machine, what would it be?

Robot housecleaner and chef

Spotted Tuesday: Pretty and Hot

Happy Tuesday!
The weather lately has been a bit crazy over here. It's supposed to be hot and dry but the rain comes to visit recently, which I don't mind actually. I would rather be cold than hot.

Outside is wet and cloudy and I thought choosing pretty and hot colors will brighten up my day and hopefully yours too.

Here are some beautiful products found on Artfire and Storenvy, handmade and non-handmade. I love handmade products. I also support small businesses regardless they are handmade or not. I myself have a handmade shop and a non-handmade shop. Those keep me busy!

Check out these amazing shops! If you are looking for accessories for yourself or your little ones, these shops are worth checking out!

Saturday Artisan: Down With Plumes

Meet Bethany, our Saturday Artisan. She is the artist and proud owner of Down With Plumes. So many gorgeous accessories to choose from. I love her style, the Victorian and lacey with a modern twist kind of neat accessories.

Let's get to know her a little bit more, shall we?

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?

I am a work-at-home-mommy to a three-year-old boy named Odin. He is a fantastic kid and lets his mommy work on Down with Plumes making tiny top hats, hair accessories, jewelry and much more!

The hats are 100% handmade from the bottom up. No hat bases are ever used, therefore every hat is totally unique. I really enjoy working on new crafts, running my blog and spending time with my husband and kiddo.

What is the story behind your shop name?

Down with Plumes was born out of the desire for a fun, play-on-words style name. It was originally Plumes and Blooms, but I never felt right calling it that. Over a few days, I thought about it constantly and obsessed over how to get the name right. In talking to a couple of friends, using "down" (as feathers) was suggested, and BOOM! It hit me.

Who is your target market?

My target market is women, ages 15-35, who love to have fun and accessorize!

Which part of creation process that you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy watching a few cut out pieces turn into a tiny top hat. It's a couple of steps, but the transformation from what most people would consider "recyclables" into wearable art is so fun!

For us who love to travel, could you share a bit about your beautiful town/ city?

I would have to say Seattle, WA. I grew up there, and it is stunning. It gets a bad rep with all the rain, but in my years living there, it was worth it.

I grew up on a 44' boat with my dad, so to me, Seattle is all about the lakes and waterfronts. I had a blast running lines through the lock system and crabbing in the Sound.

For visitors, there is so much to do and see. It's not only gorgeous, but also culturally diverse with lots of interesting activities. It's a great city to visit!

Could you share on how your organize your products, we all can use a little tips here and there in this department?

I have a very small craft space, so I've found it's best to move upwards. I have shelves on top of my desk and up the wall holding less essential supplies. Under those shelves, I have plastic storage containers.

I also have collapsible drawers for my fabric and plastic storage tubs for my flowers.

What is your best seller?

The tiny top hats are my most popular item, specifically hats with pins. They aren't as big of a seller online because the detail is lost in the photos (even with DSLR quality photos), but at craft fairs and farmers markets, the ladies go nuts for tiny top hats!

How does your day go in general?

On most days, I wake up with my little boy hovering over my face, saying "Eat? Eat? Food? Mama. Food?" Lol! Once he's taken care of for the morning, I start my coffee and hop on the computer to check on my sites.

Once that is accomplished, I take care of my house and animals and make lunch for my little boy. After lunch, Odin and I have time together to do lots of fun things, like play with trains and practice the ABCs.

Once we have dinner, Odin gets time to play with toys and watch Curious George, Daniel Tiger or something similar while I check on all my computer stuff again. Then he gets a bath and waits for his Daddy to get home, which generally isn't until about midnight.

Once the little guy is off to sleep, I get time to work and my husband works on homework. It's busy, but worth every moment :)

How do you balance your personal and work life?

This is a category I do not excel at. I'm working on teaching my son that I have to do work and he needs to occupy his own time, but it's a process. As it stands now, I squeeze things into free moments. Lol!

What inspires you?

Everything! Other people's creations, things I see in stores, and other people in general!

What is your goal for 2014?  And are you on the right track?

My goal for 2014 is to be more organized and better at advertising my own products. I am currently ahead of schedule for my goals this year (Ya-hoo!!).

What is the key to success?

Never fear failure.

Any advice for others running their on-line shop?

It's all about patience. Whether it be with your page, items, or customers... Patience is your key. Some shops do well right from the get-go and other's don't. Both are perfectly okay as long as you are happy and doing your best!

What does handmade mean to you?

To me, handmade is creating something that wasn't before. This includes re-making items (for me). I think the line is how much the original item was altered. If, for example, I'm making a dress out of another dress, I would have to severely alter the shape of the dress to consider it "handmade" and not "altered".

What is your favorite quote, song, or movie?

When I'm 64- The Beatles

Saturday Artisan: Pelhuaz by Red

Welcome to the first 2014 Saturday Artisan!

I'm pleased to introduce you to Zei, the artist behind Pelhuaz by Red. Zei is such a friendly person! I had a pleasure making custom label tags for her and she was a delight to work with! I am sure that she is an awesome shop owner and will make sure that you are satisfied with your purchase.

My favorite from Pelhuaz shop is this Druzy Necklace in pink with sterling silver chain. Isn't this gorgeous?

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?

My name is Zeide Rojas. I'm a Telecommunications Project Manager that love making crafts and most of all jewelry. I create modern bracelets, and necklace made with beads, semi precious stones, glass and charms.

What is the story behind your shop name?

The name Pelhuaz by Red actually came from my nickname. Everyone called me "Pelua" -which is the Spanish word for "Tangle" -like Brave-Merida-Curly-Hair. That's me, Zei the Pelua. After playing with the idea and my fascination with owls (translation in Spanish is buhos), the name was born. Was something like Pelua + Buho + Zei = Pelhuaz. The "Red", well is just the translation of my last name.

Who is your target market?

My target market is the modern woman who likes to look modern but by using simple accessories. Sometime less is better and with a bracelet or necklace your outfit will shine.

Which part of creation process that you enjoy the most?

I love looking for new beads or charm. After I found one that I love, I start imagining how it will look as a bracelet or as a necklace. Then is just the assembling process.

For us who love to travel, could you share a bit about your beautiful town/ city?

I live in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico, officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of both the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico is a little island that measure only 100 miles long by 35 miles wide, making it the smallest island of the Greater Antilles. Puerto Rico (Spanish for "rich port") have an exquisite weather that invite you to explore. You can find local exotic hideaways, miles of white sandy beaches, mountains and valleys, and many other natural wonders.

Could you share on how your organize your products, we all can use a little tips here and there in this department?

As soon a s I have a new creation, I assign it a number. That number is used as the inventory control number that I use at the store for listing, and the inventory matrix. Using plastic storage boxes, I organize the items by such number, saving a lot of time when a new order arrive. I just have to look for the item at the storage box and deduct it from the matrix.

What is your best seller?

My best sellers are the bohemian beaded stretch bracelets that look lovely by themselves or when stacked with other bracelets.

How does your day go in general?

As a mom, a project manager, a wife and an entrepreneur; my day goes a little fast. In the morning, I have to prepare and take the girl to school and pick her up in the afternoon. While she's at school Mama is working as a Project Manager. After picking her up, is all about homework's, tests reviews and school projects. Then the regular Mama stuff related to fixing food, house chores, etc. When the girl is ready to sleep, then I can start working with Pelhuaz -pre arranging the post, processing any new order or making new items.

How do you balance your personal and work life?

I'm trying to organize everything in a way that I can work on the store just few hour a day, leaving the rest of my time to family. Some time is a little complicated, but for me family is always first!

What inspires you?

Love, my girl, my Hubby. This are the things that moves me, and keep me alive.

What is your goal for 2014?

Pelhuaz by Red is practically a new. I opened it on June 2013, and it's being a great journey. I plan to have a total 50 sales, participate in 2 shows, being featured at few blogs -just like yours, start using my Nikon for the items photos, and work with the improvement of my marketing channels.

Any advice for others running their on-line shop?

Build a great community with people that share your same interest and are willing to help you. This is not a thing that can be done by yourself. Help is always needed. Don't be afraid to ask. If you met the right people, they will be willing and able to help.

Saving money is important; tell us one thing that you do to save money?

Don't over spend in materials. Buy only what you need and when you need it!

Stay-tuned for tomorrow's giveaway! You don't want to miss it!

Featuring fellow Etsian sellers - episode 3 - Televators

Though I have moved to the other side of the world, Etsy and the power of globalization make it easier for me to feel closer to home. I learn that it's such a small world after all when my fellow Canucks knocked on my NatSupplies store door, enjoyed their stay and bought an item or two on their way out.

Who said that videogames are for boys? Who said that playing too much of videogames is just bad and nothing good can come out of it? Researchers have shown that gamers have much better visual skills than most of the population (click here to read more).

The living proof? Meet Janna, owner of Televators. Her artworks are one of a kind. They are not the typical earrings and charms that you can find in most stores. Aren't you curious to know bit more about her and her artworks? I know I was. So here is what she says:

"One look in my Etsy shop, and you’ll know exactly what my inspiration is! It all started when I got my Nintendo 64 for Christmas one year... Not to go into details, but I loved the bright, colourful world of videogames. I’ve always been very artistically inclined; my mother is an art teacher and artist herself, and my grandmother was well-known oil painter. I myself am a full-time student in the Fine Arts program at my local University, and enjoy doing anything art-related, from painting, drawing, and sculpting, to making charms and earrings!

Because my life is so busy with school and a part-time job, I began my Etsy shop as an escape; a side-project to work on when I have the spare time. With my first sales coming in just last month, Etsy is still a very fresh and exciting place to me! I have a wide target audience, as geekdom can have all sorts of age groups. My jewellery can appeal to young kids who like games like Pokemon and older kids in their late teens such as myself, who are finally feeling a comeback in classic gaming and the niche culture of the so-called “nerd”. My creations also appeal to the older generations, nostalgic from the days of Super Nintendos and pixellated adventures. My overall goal with my Etsy shop is to have fun, and connect with people around the world who share my love of the nerdy side of life and aren’t afraid to show it!"

These would be great for Halloween:

You know you want 'em. Go get a pair each at Televators and support a newbie!

The Cellphone Strap with Lobster Clasp used for her charm is from my NatSupplies store. It's one of my popular items and is selling like hotcakes :-) I'm running out of them now but new stock is coming tomorrow.
