Saturday Artisan: TheNightjar

Meet Tarra, the artist behind TheNightjar, a shop full of high quality affordable fine art, original paintings, prints, needle felted creations and hand crafted unique jewelry that includes pendants, pins, and one of a kind items.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
I am a painter- have been my whole life and i also make jewelry and needle felted creatures. When I am not in my studio or tending my shop I teach college level art and take care of my three year old twins.

Which part of creation process that you like to do the most?
Formulation before i have to "finish" the painting- when i start a new painting anything is possible and then somewhere towards the end it is difficult to know how to end the painting.

Could you share how you organize your products, we all can use a few tips here and there in this department?
I try to group according to what i am selling and not necessarily by color. So if I have a number of felt creatures I try to put them all together, my prints together and all paintings together and all jewelry together.

What is your favorite item in your shop?
My Victorian pendant necklace with a miniature painting of a Swallow.

What is your best seller? A toss up between my Dandelion print and my fuzzy felt pendant...however any miniature painting that i frame tends to disappear quickly.

How does your day go in general? Up at 6:30, check Etsy, 7 AM take care of kids, go to gym and take kids drop off in childcare, feed kids and play, nap for kids and then I check Etsy shop again, work, paint , internet work until kids wake up, if I have childcare I paint more in my studio, then feed kids at night, check shop again and then when the kids go to bed I get to needlefelt while I listen to music (favorite part of the day).

Do you have a favourite Etsy seller? So many quality artists are on Etsy that just one is hard t name....swanbones, groundwork, redvelvet, gretchenmist, pogoshop to name a few gems.

What inspires you?
Mostly dreams but also watching nature closely. Before I had children I watched birds and collected them when I found them. Much to my husbands dismay I would freeze them and take them out to paint when I needed a still life subject. I have a stunningly beautiful Cedar Waxwing in my freezer who had flown into our front living room window. I also have a tiny Bewicks wren… and my mascot Armadillo for my studio- but he is taxidermied. I also have a giant collection of nests, my hummingbird nest is my favorite.

What is your goal for 2010? And are you on the right track? double sales- so far so good!

What is your favourite tool that you cannot live without?
A dentists scraping tool I use for details in some paintings.

How do you promote your shop?
Treasuries, blogs and also the gallery that shows my work in downtown Oakland ...no Twitter- i just dont like it! (but i am trying to)

Anything else you would like to share? I just lost my really cool 20 year old three legged cat, Sweet Pea- she was so terrific and I miss her but now I still have her brother, Spartacus who is also 20.

Love her shop already? Stay-tuned for tomorrow's giveaway!

Spotted Tuesday: Pooh Inspired

This week Spotted Tuesday is inspired by my 2-years old son's best friend: 'baby Pooh'. Pooh maybe worn out (warning: too much love affection may worn you out), LOL, but he holds a special place in Ethan's life and to be honest I'm afraid that Ethan may choose him over me. Hik...Hik.

Enjoy these beautiful findings and let me know which one is your favorite?

Saturday Artisan: ModernClassicsKids/ ModernClassicsPaper

Meet this week Saturday Artisan: ModernClassicsKids & ModernClassicsPaper.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?

I’m a happily married Mommy with a BFA in Textiles. Funny thing is my loom & spinning wheel have been collecting dust in my basement for the past 5 years. I’ve since found my calling in the paper industry. I’m drawn to all things paper…books, stationery, calendars, photography, hence, my two shops: ModernClassicsKids & ModernClassicsPaper.

What is your best seller?

I’d say my best seller in my Kids’ shop are my bookplates ~ the Baby Shower Bookplates to be specific. They’re a great accessory to any Baby Shower & the perfect gift for the Baby-to-Be!

As far as my photography goes, Summer Swings takes the prize!

How does your day go in general?
As of late, my schedule has changed. After my son began Kindergarten this year, I found myself with lots of “ME time” & tons of room for creativity and networking. Just when I got used to my new routine, I got a surprise called from a previous employer who presented me with an offer I couldn’t refuse. On top of all that, a friend with her own dog-walking business added me to her staff as well. So, I’m one busy gal! It can get a bit hectic at times but I love keeping busy!
What is your favourite tool that you cannot live without?
I could not live without my laptop! I’m not one to sit idle, so even when I have time to relax, I’m creating. It’s just how I unwind!

How do you promote your shop?
I’m still working hard on networking. That’s my downfall, whatever free time I have, I tend to spend it either playing with my family or creating new pieces for my shops. By the time, it comes to promoting, I’m wiped out. I’m getting better though and have been blogging, tweeting, Facebooking & creating a customer database for email advertising. It is paying off but I know I need to be more diligent in 2010.

Look at Jaimee's workspace, so neat and organized! Inspiring! I would love creating in that room.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's giveaway sponsored by ModernClassicsPaper. I'm sure you will love it!

Wanted!

If you've been following my blog, you know that on the past couple of Tuedays, I've been featuring Etsy artisans. For Spotted Tuesday, I come up with a theme and search fabulous handmade items in Etsy.

In 2010, I have also decided to dedicate one day to do a full feature of an Etsy artist: Saturday Artisans. At the moment I focus on Etsy site, but you never know if you will see artists from other sites :-) This is one of my ways paying back to the handmade community and support other artists.

I have started searching for artists to be featured and found some great artists but I'm still looking for more, after all there is 52 weeks in a year :-)

You can nominate yourself, or if you know a wonderful Etsy artist who I should feature, please let me know. Here are some important criteria to be featured in my blog:
  • Must have great customer service, first and foremost. Friendliness and going above and beyond are keys to successful business. If I don't see that in you then I don't think I can refer my readers to your shop. I want my friends to really enjoy their buying experience and I need to have the confidence that they will get that from your shop.
  • Have at least 30 listed items in your shop in order to provide a good variety of products to choose from.
  • Have great pictures: clear and crisp.
  • Optional: Sponsoring a giveaway is greatly appreciated
So how to contact me? You can convo me, send me a message at twitter, or even leave a comment here. But hurry, the New Year is just around the corner!

Spotted Tuesday: Baby, It's Cold Outside

Last year, around this time of year, I complained about how hot the weather was. Too hot that having two air conditioners on in our bedroom wasn't enough. If you've been following my blog, you know that I was in Indonesia, being jealous of you guys who 'enjoyed' the cold weather and the snow. Lol, I know that my friends who lived in North America, complained about how crazy cold the weather was.

Well, this year I'm expecting to see some snow. It'll be great to have a white christmas..It'll also be great to see Ethan play in the snow for the first time. The last time he saw snow was when he was only four months old and really, not much he could do with the snow at that age.

Below are beautiful handmade items which you can find at Etsy, perfect for this winter holidays theme.
