Saturday Artisan: SarahCate Creations

Meet Sarah, our Saturday Artisan!

Sarah is the artist behind SarahCate Creations. She is an avid photographer and jewelry maker. Her photographs are outstanding and her jewelries are simply beautiful. I find her inspiring! She let go something she loved to do and was able to master another skill. Let's learn more about this strong-willed artist.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?

I'm a 32 year old Uterine Cancer survivor (1 year of remission last month!). Before Cancer (and the neuropathy that disabled me after chemo) I was an avid and active nature, landscape and architectural photographer, but after having to put my camera on the shelf so to speak, I've taken up creating beaded jewelry. I started beading originally about 10 years ago when I got frustrated trying to find designs that suited me.

Now I almost never wear my own work, but I still enjoy creating varied designs and pride myself on having something for just about everyone!

My special pet project is creating jewelry featuring awareness ribbons in designs that are both eye-catching and unique.

What is the story behind your shop name?

My photography business was always SarahCate Photography. The SarahCate is kind of a Texan thing, we love a double name down here! Since I've had to put my photography away for the time being, I needed to refocus my branding to cover a larger product base. SarahCate Creations seemed a natural switch that allowed a broader selection of items including my photographic art.

Who is your target market?

My pieces typically sell best to the 20-40 female crowd, but there are grandmothers and even great grandmothers sporting SarahCate Creations, and my photographic prints appeal to just about everyone.

Which part of creation process that you enjoy the most?

Even though I rarely wear jewelry myself, I get a really big thrill out of putting together a piece that is genuinely beautiful. Every once in a while I'll finish a piece and just... find myself really captivated by the play of colors and textures.

As a photographer, I always really enjoyed capturing something I had to chase. We had a blue-jay at the house that absolutely TAUNTED me... for years. Finally one unusually snowy morning, I was able to photograph him on a branch. It's still one of my favorite photos- and photo stories to tell too.

For us who love to travel, could you share a bit about your beautiful town/ city?

I'm in Dallas, Texas. I've lived here since 2006 but I was born here and lived in Richardson until we moved in CA when I was 6 years old. There's a certain friendliness and welcoming attitude that's evident in this part of the state and with the mix of historic architecture and protected natural areas- it's a dream for a well-rounded photographer.

Could you share on how your organize your products, we all can use a little tips here and there in this department?

I went through many MANY systems to try and organize both my loose materials and my finished pieces and finally found something that works for me! My loose beads are kept in craft-mate keepers, they lock and each opening can be accessed individually which is perfect for all my beads and things.

And for finished pieces, I actually use a Stanley tools holder! They have individual compartments that fit several necklaces each, and they stack and click together for easy hauling to events or sales or home-parties.

What is your best seller?

Because I don't generally repeat designs- it's hard to really pick one. Natural stone pieces tend to get snatched up pretty quickly, but lately there's been a lot of requests for animal pendants- octopi and owls specifically!

How does your day go in general?

We're night people around here so I usually get up pretty late and then start my work in the late afternoon or evening. Depending on how my hands feel I'll make anywhere from 1 piece to as many as 7 pieces or more. Sometimes I make color batches, bunches of pink pieces or red etc, or sometimes I get inspired by a certain subject and will churn out a bunch of different animal themed pendants. I generally bead till I'm too tired to keep beading!

Then I set up my little desktop photo space and photograph the days pieces and set about measuring, cataloging and listing them. I keep a catalogue through photoshop that can be easily updated, modified and printed to take with me to events.

How do you balance your personal and work life?

Right now I mostly focus on listening to my body. The neuropathy I acquired during chemo in 2012 has stayed with me, and I have to really heed when my feet and hands are *done*.

Other than that, because of my post-cancer issues I remain otherwise unemployed and can pretty much divide up my time however I like within the limits of my pain threshold at least.

And because I did so much beading during chemo (great distraction from nauseous!) I have a stockpile of pieces ready to sell so if I do want or need to take time away from active work- there is still stock in my shop.

What inspires you?

Color. Well, usually color. I tend to shop more by color than stone except in special cases.

Admittedly a lot of my work is in blue and green tones as those speak to me most, but I have been known to build a whole design out of a single random string of beads that I picked up just because I liked the color or play of colors within them.

What is your goal for 2014?

I really want to bring in new customers. So far most of my sales have been to friends and/or family which is awesome. But I originally opened my shop up in the hopes it could help me start paying some of my medical bills since I've been unable to go back to working a regular job.

Other than that, it's just to continue creating beautiful designs for people to wear. I get a big kick out of hearing from customers how much they love their pieces and how often they wear them.

I would really like to see the awareness jewelry take off more. When I was first diagnosed I was so bummed to find that the color for Uterine Cancer was peach. There was almost NO jewelry in peach, and nothing that suited my personal style. Now I try to create batches of ribbon jewelry in a variety of colors and styles- because I want people to feel like awareness doesn't have to be so utilitarian.

Any advice for others running their on-line shop?

Promote promote promote. That and linking to multiple social media sites is critical. The day I set up the instagram for my shop my hit count went from around 20 per day to as many as 600-700 per day. It's not always that high, but when I post in-process photos followed by finished piece photos on my instagram, my hit counts are always high in the shop.

Saving money is important; tell us one thing that you do to save money?

I'm a terrible saver- that's the honest truth. But probably my biggest thing is clearance shopping. Unless I'm working on a really specific design or a commissioned piece- I almost ALWAYS look at the clearance rack FIRST. I've gotten some great bead strings there, and been able to build some really quality pieces from them.

Being a consistent clearance shopper (and watching for coupons) allows me to keep my prices down, even though I *could* reasonably charge more.

So where can we get in touch with Sarah?

Saturday Artisan: BackwoodDesignStudio

Meet Shannon, the artist and photographer behind Backwood Design Studio.

You can find beautiful digital photographics and digital arts at her shop. Oh how I wish I can have her talents, great in taking pictures and drawing.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
I'm a 27 year old stay at home mom to my 8 month old daughter. I have always been interested in all things artsy since I was young. I've always loved drawing, creating and imagining. I never can seem to get enough of being creative. I will try and do pretty much anything when it comes to art. In my shop, I create digital photography and digital artwork.

Which part of creation process that you like to do the most?
I love actually going out and taking photos. I always have a certain angle and look in my head and I try very hard to recreate it and make it a reality. I also very much enjoy digitally tweaking my photographs on my computer. I spend a decent amount of time to get the coloring and look & feel just right.

What inspires you?
Typically every day life inspires me. Whenever I go places, I am constantly thinking to myself "that would make a great picture". Usually, I drive down the road, looking at the landscape and envision so many wonderful photographs in my mind. For this reason, I really try to take my camera with me whenever I go somewhere. You never know when that perfect shot may present itself.

What is your goal for 2010? And are you on the right track?
My goal for 2010 is to get more exposure for my photography and digital art. I'm hoping to gain more of a fan base by the end of the year. Art and photography in general is so hard to break into because there are so many talented artists out there. I'm just hoping to find my own niche and hope that others enjoy my work too.

What is your favourite tool that you cannot live without?
I absolutely love my Mac and I could not live without it. I have been able to do so many wonderful things with my photography and artwork with this computer. It's always fast and reliable and I know that I can produce some great art with it.

Saturday Artisan: Kelly D Brown Photography and Design

Meet our Saturday Artisan, Kelly, the artist and owner behind beautiful photography shop, kellydbrown. A talented artist from Montreal, Canada, close to home with the exception she is on the east and I'm on the west. :-) Take a peek at her shops and you'll find gorgeous and unique artworks. You should like her FB fanpage. Psst! She shares some promotion codes there. But maybe you may want to stick here a while. It's always a good thing to get to know the artist a little bit.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
I'm a photographer and digital artist with shops on Etsy and ArtFire. My work is difficult to categorize as a whole (at least for me) since I'm as drawn to grungy urban environments as much as I am to the beauty of nature. I can say that there is definitely a desire to create a certain mood, whether it be light and whimsical or slightly ominous.

Which part of creation process that you like to do the most?
I love reviewing fresh new images I've just captured. This always gets my imagination going. However, it takes a bit of time to determine which image I find inspiring enough to work with. In any one session I may go through many images, trying different techniques until I find something that really feels like it's taking shape. It can be frustrating spending the time and feeling like you're not getting anywhere, but I've come to realize the value of experimentation during this part of the process. Hit the right combination of effects and ending up with something I really love is better than chocolate.

What is your favourite item in your shop?
I tend to favour my black and white pieces due to the amount of time I spend working on them. Colour can be so seductive - I'm a big fan of hot pinks, deep reds, and turquoise. Once the colour is removed, one must enhance and define the details in a much more creative way. I find the process challenging and therefore, more rewarding.

How do you promote your shop?
I love Twitter. Quite honestly I started out with the intention of promoting my products, but as I started to follow people, I started making some great connections. I've discovered so many great blogs and resources related (as well as unrelated) to my work through them. I can't say if I've actually had any sales as a result, but in many ways promotion has become less important.

I also have a Facebook Fanpage which allows me to interact with people via video, pictures and special offers - I love the comments I get!

Anything else you would like to share?
I'd like to give a special shout-out to all of the animals (wild and domesticated) who've been so co-operative in allowing me to photograph them. Most of all, I'd like to thank the people who like my work enough to buy it. It's a really wonderful feeling when I get an email notifying me of my latest sale. In July, I exhibited at the Festival International Montréal en Arts (FIMA). It was my first show and it went extraordinarily well. I've since been invited to participate in Art Westmount 2010. I'll be showcasing my photography at Victoria Hall in Westmount, Quebec on October 2nd and 3rd.

Saturday Artisan: Briole

Meet this week Saturday Artisan: Heather, proud shop owner of Briole.

What caught my attention when I visited her shop at the first time was those sharp and crisp colors in her photographs. Simply stunning! I'd bet the actual photographs are way better than pictured.

I really like her 2010 goal. It's something that I actually plan to do after being too exhausted every single day for the last 2 months, trying to do everything which we all know is impossible (I'm NOT a wonder woman!).

So read on and learn about this fantastic artist and stay tuned for tomorrow's exciting giveaway from Briole.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
My name is Heather Green, I grew up in Minnesota and worked my way down the Mississippi, living in St. Louis and then moving to New Orleans in May 2005. I met a great guy when I first moved to New Orleans and during hurricane Katrina, we evacuated back to St. Louis, settled in and got married a little over a year later. We like to think of our marriage one of the good things that came out of Hurricane Katrina. I was born into a family of crafty women, I am a fifth generation quilter besides enjoying my first artistic love, photography! For me, photography is a great opportunity to look at so many of the amazing things in the world in a new perspective. It brings me great joy to capture a detail or moment in time that I may have otherwise overlooked.

What is your favorite item in your shop?
This is a hard question! My favorite images are probably the three "Abstract Palm" photos. They are so vibrant and colorful and almost look like abstract paintings. I have them hung over my couch and I never get tired of looking at them.

Do you have a favourite Etsy seller?
All of them! No seriously, there are so many amazing artist on Etsy that it would be impossible to pick just one.

What inspires you?
My mom, Jan Douglas, who is am amazing quilt artist and starting her own company, my husband who is always encouraging me to be the best I can be and the beauty in nature.

What is your goal for 2010?
To slow down and enjoy every day and every opportunity that comes my way. Life is too short and goes by faster and faster all the time, I want to live in the moment so I don't have any regrets later about life passing me by.

What is your favourite tool that you cannot live without?
My camera! None of this would be possible without it.

How do you promote your shop?
I have a facebook fan page and I try to be involved in the Etsy community by posting in the forums and occasionally stopping in to say hi in the chat rooms. I also always have business cards on me and try to give them out whenever an opportunity presents itself!

Any advice for a newbie running his or her on-line shop?
Use the tools available through the Etsy community before setting up your shop. I spent a ton of time in the forums before starting my shop and I feel like it really prepared me to start a successful shop.

During this recession time, tell us one thing that you do to save money?
My husband and I are staying home more and enjoying things like playing cards and cooking rather than feeling like we have to go out to have fun.

Thank you Heather for sharing and thanks everyone who takes the time to learn more about Heather.

Saturday Artisan: filigreephotos

Meet this week Saturday Artisan couple, Liga and Janis of filigreephotos. A couple who each has a special talent and sharing it with the world. I'm in awe of how beautiful snapshots of nature Janis was able to take. And calling himself, ameteur photograph? Hmm...he's just being humble, IMO.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
We come from small country in Europe – Latvia. We live in beautiful rural area, in fact biosphere reserve. So almost every day we se beauty of nature and it’s inspiring. Janis is amateur photographer. I’m unemployed for now so as I have free time I decided to promote my husband’s wonderful artwork.

What is your favourite item in your shop?
In fact there are two – Snowflake photo

Snowflake – it was a miraculous moment to see it after uploading from camera to PC – so detailed, fragile and unique...you’ll never see something like this with naked eye.

and owl photo

Owl – this kind of owls are quite rare here in our country so we were very lucky to see it and even more to take photo of it. This photo also shows skill of Janis as a photographer – it’s taken with vintage heavy manual lens (MTO-500)... and it’s not easy to photograph flying bird with manual lens!

What is your best seller?
We haven’t had many sales yet, because we’re newbies on Etsy. But for now our best seller is photo cards.

How does your day go in general?
Janis has regular job, so he goes to work in the morning. I usually do what’s needed to be done at home – like cleaning, cooking...but most of my day 10.00am – 4 or 5 pm is dedicated to promoting our Etsy shop. Listings, promoting in forums, twitter. Not very long time ago we started our blog and I plan to make facebook fan page also! (and they have a FB fanpage by the time this interview is posted). Actually these things take a lot of time. In the evening Janis often does some photo projects and I do my crafts – I make lamps. (and she finally opened a store selling the lamps, yei!! It's FiligreeCreations.

Do you have a favourite Etsy seller?
We don’t have one particular favorite. But I have a favorite thread – in Etsy forums promotion section there is a wonderful thread with many lovely and helpful people – Enyaeires thread. Many thanks to people of this thread for helping and being so nice to us!

What inspires you?
I’m inspired by many small things like good tea, snow, smell of rain, but I never can get an answer to this question from Janis – he says to him inspiration just comes from somewhere and it has nothing to do with outer factors... :-) he does not know himself.

What is your goal for 2010?
Hmm..hard to say – we have a list of goals actually. It’s about being seen and inspire!

What is your favourite tool that you cannot live without?
For Janis it’s his pile of photo equipment – especially he loves manual lenses. My is not a tool – it’s my senses. It may sound wierd, but I mostly get my inspiration from all the small things (like I mentioned before) – smell of tea, rain, trees, seeing moments in nature – like birds playing in the snow. And I can’t do anything properly if I don’t have inspiration.

How do you promote your shop?
We’re always looking for new ways to promote our shop. For now it’s Etsy forums, blog (www.filigreephotos.blogspot.com ), and twitter (http://twitter.com/filigreephotos ).

Any advice for a newbie running his or her on-line shop?

We’re newbies, so we don’t have much advice to give...but I guess I could mention some things... 1) Be kind and nice to everyone. Treat them as you want yourself to be treated. 2) Good photos are important if you want to be really successful. There’s piles of info available on internet about improving quality of your photos. Invest time in visual appearance of your shop and it’ll pay back.
