Saturday Artisan: KhaliNouveau

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Meet Aiysha of KhaliNouveau, our Saturday Artisan. She has an Etsy shop that offers original artworks, unique ornaments, decorative gift boxes to rare vintage books. My first impression seeing her shop was "Wow, this gal has so much talents, look how deverse the arts/ crafts that she makes."

Life can be stressful nowadays and one of Aiysha answers below is a good reminder on how we should face our daily life. Simple answer and yet powerful!.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
My name is Aiysha Khaalid, nickname Khali, I am a full-time artist with a bachelor degree in Fine Arts. I'm a painter, an illustrator, a mixed media artist, and crafter residing in Boston, MA. I am a proud owner of the shop KhaliNouveau which offers original artworks, unique ornaments, decorative gift boxes to rare vintage books.

Which part of creation process that you like to do the most?
I whip out a pencil and paper. I like to sketch out my creative ideas before I execute any project.

Could you share on how you organize your products, we all can use a little tip here and there in this department?

I don’t have a lot of time to work on projects during the week so it’s crucial to organize a committed weekly schedule with plans and goals jot down in a notebook. Laying out a plan first can save a lot of time to prepare.

What is your favorite item in your shop?
At the moment, my favorite item in my shop would be children vintage books. I get a thrilling feeling when I discover a preserved and rare children book with beautiful illustrations.

What is your best seller?
My bird ornaments are the top sellers and customers just love them. The next step is to work on selling more of my paintings.

How does your day go in general?
Easy going and relaxed.

Do you have a favorite Etsy seller?
Yes. I bought and had custom stickers made from PinkiesPalace. I simply love her stickers and it’s a great price.

What is your goal for 2010? And are you on the right track?
I would like to close out the year reaching 100 sales and working hard to meet that goal.

Any advice for others running their on-line shop?
I would say don’t be afraid to fail or make mistakes, that’s part of the learning process as an artist.

Stay-tuned for the giveaway that will start tomorrow.

In the meantime, don't forget to enter these 2 giveaways going on right now, each to win $25 gift certificate: Natalie Hopeful's giveaway (ends Nov 7th) and the other one is charmeddesign1012's giveaway (ends Oct 31st).

Saturday Artisan: Natalie Hopeful

Meet the young Natalie, our Saturday Artisan of this week. Tee Hee. I said young cuz I'm the old Natalie. Ha! Anyhoo...Natalie Hopeful (love the name of the shop!) makes beautiful jewelries and hand-crafted gift boxes. Visiting her shop always makes me smile. I love the soft colors she uses and the combination of these colors to make stunning jewelries. Find out how she gets her inspiration from our interview below:

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
I am a 21-year-old married college student. My husband and I are both classical musicians, so most of our time is spent teaching, rehearsing, practicing, or performing. When I am not doing one of those things, or homework, or going to class, I sit in the corner of my living room to make jewelry! My husband is so sweet and doesn't mind the constant supply of beads, wire, and general nonsense that takes up the corner...he only occasionally requests that I try to corral it a bit when it starts to take over(=

Which part of creation process that you like to do the most?
In life, I am inspired by color. I am inspired by different colors placed next to each other, whatever the objects are. This morning I am sitting at my table being made happy by the fact that my teal cereal bowl is sitting next to the yellow box of cheerios with a pink stripe across it! Which brings me to my actual answer...I love the part where I pull out all my supplies and get to dream up new color combinations, or apply combinations I've just seen in life--like teal and yellow and pink!

What is your favourite item in your shop? My favorite item is this pair of purple earrings:They are an example of my new-found love for copper wire, as well as my long-standing love for purple.

Do you have a favourite Etsy seller? Yes...without a doubt, Patrick Irla is my favorite seller on Etsy. His work makes me squeal with delight. The little hydrangea blossoms he makes are adorable, lovable, and elegant all at the same time. If only I could afford to buy something from him...anything at all...

What is your goal for 2010? And are you on the right track?
My goal for 2010 is to gain more exposure in the wonderful world of Etsy. The sheer number of jewelry designers on Etsy is somewhat intimidating. Hopefully this feature is a good step towards becoming one of the more successful!

What is your favourite tool that you cannot live without?
I have a pair of flat needle nose pliers that I stole from my dad's garage long, long ago. (every once in a while he reminds me that they are still his and then I remind him that he never uses them anyway) They are way better quality than anything you can buy for making jewelry with and I love them.

My Creative Space - Holiday Tags

I felt I'm behind with the prep for this 2010 holiday season. I felt that I could do more. Buy hey, we only have 24 hrs in a day and being able to juggle my works being a mom, a wife, an on-line shops owner and the only employee, on top of my full-time job, maybe I should give myself a break. Don't you think so? :-)So, here are 2 sets of my holiday tags.

One is the holiday cheer tags.

And here is another set of adorable christmas tags.

Each set comes in a set of 12 for $3.50. A sweet deal!

Oh, I still have more tags available in my shop. And I'm working on a few more holiday tags along with holiday cards. Once I finish taking pictures of them, I'll list these sweet goodies real soon.

What are you working on?

One Autumn Day

What beautiful days the past weekend were. It was a bit cold all of a sudden, the sign of fall season is finally here. Fortunately, the sun didn't dissapoint us a bit.

When the weather is splendid like this, the best way is to go out and enjoy it while it last. So we drove up to Buntzen Lake, not too far way from where we live.

Ethan had so much fun running around freely. Of course he ended up fell down and that white hoodie top got muddy.

But what he enjoyed the best was ... throwing rocks into the lake!!

Now it's your turn to tell me: what did you do on the weekend?

Saturday Artisan: charmeddesign1012

Introducing our Saturday Artisan this week, meet Lori the artist behind Charmeddesign1012.

A great story behind her shop. So touching and it's real. And that's one of so many things that differentiate between handmade and mass-produced products.
It turns out that my favorite is hers as well.
Find out which one as you read the interview below.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
I am a 42 Atlanta,GA native that is now living in New Haven, CT. I have lived here a little over two years now. About a year ago, I became ill from an infection that was a side effect of a routine tooth extraction. I came very close to dying, had several life saving surgeries, and am blessed to be here today. My first bracelets came into being as something constructive and positive to do while recovering from this sudden and life threatening illness.

I sell charm jewelry, mostly wrap bracelets made from leather, satin and silk. I use charms that inspire me and make me smile and stones I find beautiful. My jewelry is all about feeling good.

Which part of creation process that you like to do the most?
I love seeing the final product and how my vision is now a reality.

What is your favourite item in your shop?
My favorite item is a silk wrap bracelet.

What is your best seller?
So far, my sales have been varied. I have a lot of pieces in my shop, and I have only been on etsy three months, so I am not surprised I do not yet have a best seller. I do a lot of custom pieces as well.

What inspires you?
Although I lost my job, home, and life as I knew it, surviving such a near death experience has made me feel and believe that I am indeed - CHARMED. My jewelry reflects my experience and love for life. I am inspired by signs and symbols that are all around us and that, if we let them, can uplift and guide us. It can be something as simple as a leaf falling from a tree.

Holiday season is fast approaching. Give us a scoop on your prep. What are you exciting to offer for 2010 holiday season?
This is my first holiday season so I do not know what to expect. I am trying to build up my inventory and I have stocked up on shipping supplies. I am considering whether to offer holiday discounts.

How do you promote your shop?
I am constantly looking for new ways to market my shop I designed a logo, banner, business cards, wrapping that are all cohesive as a brand. I seek out opportunities, like this, to expose my craft to new audiences. I now have a blog and a facebook page. I make treasuries. But, my most important marketing tool is amazing customer service. I try to return emails within an hour, mail items the same day they are bought, wrap them nicely, make changes to pieces for free, anything reasonable that makes my customers happy. I already have had a few sales that were referrals from past customers.

My Creative Space - Family Shadow Box

I had a pleasure working on another shadow box (here to see the 1st one I made). This time, it's for birthday girl with a theme not so much on birthday.

The mom wants this to be more about FAMILY, hence the pictures of the birthday girl and her sisters. The parents holding hands picture was shot from behind and was actually an important part of this keepsake. Mom said that this is a symbol that they aka parents will always support them and watch over them. Isn't that neat?

Saturday Artisan: BackwoodDesignStudio

Meet Shannon, the artist and photographer behind Backwood Design Studio.

You can find beautiful digital photographics and digital arts at her shop. Oh how I wish I can have her talents, great in taking pictures and drawing.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what arts/ crafts that you make?
I'm a 27 year old stay at home mom to my 8 month old daughter. I have always been interested in all things artsy since I was young. I've always loved drawing, creating and imagining. I never can seem to get enough of being creative. I will try and do pretty much anything when it comes to art. In my shop, I create digital photography and digital artwork.

Which part of creation process that you like to do the most?
I love actually going out and taking photos. I always have a certain angle and look in my head and I try very hard to recreate it and make it a reality. I also very much enjoy digitally tweaking my photographs on my computer. I spend a decent amount of time to get the coloring and look & feel just right.

What inspires you?
Typically every day life inspires me. Whenever I go places, I am constantly thinking to myself "that would make a great picture". Usually, I drive down the road, looking at the landscape and envision so many wonderful photographs in my mind. For this reason, I really try to take my camera with me whenever I go somewhere. You never know when that perfect shot may present itself.

What is your goal for 2010? And are you on the right track?
My goal for 2010 is to get more exposure for my photography and digital art. I'm hoping to gain more of a fan base by the end of the year. Art and photography in general is so hard to break into because there are so many talented artists out there. I'm just hoping to find my own niche and hope that others enjoy my work too.

What is your favourite tool that you cannot live without?
I absolutely love my Mac and I could not live without it. I have been able to do so many wonderful things with my photography and artwork with this computer. It's always fast and reliable and I know that I can produce some great art with it.

Stay-tuned for tomorrow's giveaway!

Saturday Artisan: Seraphina Rose

Meet Jessica, our Saturday Artisan! Jessica is the artist and owner of Seraphina Rose, the children's clothing shop with a little bit of fun and a little bit of funky. She has a section at her shop, called Pink Ribbon, where she donate 60% of the sales to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Jess wears a lot of hats just like me and most moms, so we can relate to her chaos days so well. Learn how she promotes her shop!

In her own words, I am a mother of two (3 1/2, 8 mos) and I work part time as an addictions counselor. I love all crafts, but mostly I love scrapbooking and sewing. I began (as many do) by making some stuff for my kid, and figured I could try to share my passion with other cute kids!

My favorite item is the Skladdaugh - not so much a favorite on etsy, haven't sold any of them, but I love it! a little bit of edge, a little bit of irish... My best seller... I'm not sure there is one thing... people like the zoo animals... those are kinda big sellers!

My goal for 2010 is to get noticed more. I have a new heat press that allows me to create digital images and print almost anything, and i love it! I've been trying to do a lot of promoting and talking to others. There are so many places to promote, it becomes a lot of work very quickly. I'm not as on track with that as I'd like - because I have 2 kids that I stay home with along with my part time job evenings/ weekends, but I'm chugging away as much as I can! I am, however, much much more noticed now than I was a few months ago! so i'm getting somewhere!

Right now, my promoting is on Facebook, on Twitter, on a blog, and on mom forums. there are a few forums that I'll pop into, and that brings in a lot of views. sometimes I'll show up in the etsy forums, too. with facebook, I'm doing a lot of fanning other artists and leaving link love posts, which brings the fans right back to me!

My favorite tool right now that I cannot live without is my heat press. it allows me to do so many different things! I've been doing fabric appliques for a while, and they look great, but they are not as time-effective as the heat-pressed items!
